It was the most dreadful night off the year...
At first, in the evening, there was a blow of a cold wind,
And the clouds were no more,
But the stars and the moon were shinning,
And yet their bliss was very weak, and in the very moment of the night,
It was overcome:
Firstly by the fearful darkness, which over clouded everything,
And then, by the light of the some stars and planets,
Though few could remembered,
That it was exactly the same formation in the sky as 50 years ago...
Every single living being were seeking a shelter,
And they trembled before such things...
Beasts and birds sounded no more, and it was a tinnitus silence,
Yet someone was moving in the darkness,
It looked as a strange shadow, a cloaked and darker than a whole night,
If one could be nigh, he could see two little twinkles
As a burning flame of anger and vengeance,
And those were they eyes of a man,
And a man was whispering to himself:
-So, thou have comet! Why now, what thou need from me?
Have not thou had enough? Do thee want more blood, more pain??
Curse you, and your prophecy, and may the gods cast your soul!!
And light was no more in the sky, and the same dreadful darkness came,
And a man has heard terrible steps, the same steps as long before,
Yet only in his mind, and very silent ones...
It was a feeling of unknown power, that it shall take and crush the man,
But he feared not for himself, and yet he had a fear for others, that has left
And so he stood in all his tall stature,
And gazed with flaming eyes to the darkness...
And suddenly the darkness, which seemed drove so nigh, vanished...
And only a simple night remained, and all were asleep,
And the man felt weary, and he walked to his home,
And before passing away told himself:
-I shall not let to take them from me! Not this time, I will hold and.....
And he fell asleep then, and could not keep his promise,
He was sleeping in a dream of another world,
And it was long, too long indeed, to stop the fate from its steps...
There was no single cloud in an early morning sky,
And no wind blow, and only peaceful breath of freshness and the new dawn
And the mist still covered the earth,
And it was all dark still...
But one could feel the smell of the trees,
The old pines and firs stood gallant as the stone pillars of the old...
And ere the sun came in sudden bliss!!
And its shafts as long bright arrows hit the land...
And it has become clearer in that land,
For yet the mist still did not whish to release it from its cover...
The land of trees and hills...
And six hills stood clad in green from the trees,
And one naked hill, onto which a wooden house stood.
Proud people lived there,
And yet they kept their culture and language in peace...
And there were many hidden houses in the woods near the river,
And there were caves in those six hills,
And noble people lived their, and they were ruled by they mighty Lord,
From the naked hill, and they loved him and listened to him,
And they called him the Stumbreadan, and he was tall and dark haired,
And he was proud but sad,
And he had two sons-Vilyanar and Rimvendyn, and no spouse he had,
For she has perished long ago, in the stormy waters of a dark blue river,
And he called this river the memory of his wife - Nerisya
And both of his sons were young and cheerful,
They’ve loved their land:
The woods, and little hidden houses and mighty caves,
And they've loved the people which dwelt there,
But they were forbidden to pass along the great road of dead,
Which has leaded to the land of forever calmness, to the barrows?
And it was always guarded, and the little lights were alight,
And no one could pass beyond the road, for it was foretold,
That spirits of the people, who died want beyond the road of dead,
And then they passed to the dark woods of On-that-hill...
And rumours were heard, that laumesayen lived in that wood,
And they were gathering the spirits and deciding,
Who is worthy for endless pain and anguish in the shadows,
And who is worthy of glory and reborn...
It was another restless night for Rimvendyn,
And he could not sleep, for at the very moment of passing to asleep,
He dreamed the same nightmare, of which he spoke not,
Because he was afraid and yet he was proud, as his father,
He did not tell anyone of his dreams, and his brother suspected not of them
And Rimvendyn woke up early in that morning as always,
And he walked in front of his house strangely anxious
And gazing to the first shafts of the sun, which touched the land,
Whence a comfortless energy came,
And the mist, which still lied on the valleys beyond the woody hills
Tempted him...It tempted his body to walk north and east...
But he knew that in the east there had been well known forests and plains, where he, with his brother and their father usually hunted...
But the north...the north was a forbidden place,
And he then strongly desired to see it,
He wondered, what could lie beyond the dark wood of On-that-hill...
The feeling strengthened, but Rimvendyn was stout and had strong will
So he closed his eyes and tried to relax...
Instead an image a came and he fell to a strange dream, standing outdoors
Odd pictures appeared in his mind and they were far of his understanding:
He felt as in a dream, as being wolf, hurrying somewhere,
He could hear the beat of his heart and the weary breathing,
He felt, as he was chasing someone, and being chased by something...
He felt the darkness and the cold, touching him,
But he could not stop, and ran deeper and deeper unto the wood,
The roots seemed terrible to him,
And the trees were different also -
It locked as if they were from another time, from another world,
And then he saw a little glade and a thick high tree...
-Rimven,Rimven!!-he heard the well known voice.
And then he opened his eyes, and saw his brother standing nigh.
-what art thou doing here, so early?
Rimvendyn made a gloomy face and turned it to the northern darkness:
-I must go there, my brother, it is calling me,
I must see, the road is calling me
And what's beyond I do not know, but I have a whish, a strongest ever had...
Vilyanar look at his brother with amazement and fear,
As to a mad man, decided to pass away. And he whispered silently
-Why do you speak of that? Do not you know,
That the this road is cursed,
That it is forbidden to pass for us or anyone else?
What dreadful dream thou had, if speak of such things..?
But Rimvendyn, seemed to devour the woods with his farsighted eyes,
And suddenly he replied:
-I shall go, and thou do as thou whish, but do not tell this t father!
Vilyanar seemed to burst into the tears:
-No! Do not go there! They will take you away...no...
And he looked to the north also,
And he felt then a deep hatred to that wood,
But inside of him, the same blood flowed,
And the same whish was deeply buried,
Now it was aweakening...yet not as strong as in his brothers mind,
But the temptation was growing, and he resisted much indeed,
And then Rimvendyn told in dismal voice:
-take thy bow and I shall take mine, and follow me, we have to go...
And so, the to little figures went down through the valleys and woody hills,
And everyone was asleep, and they were sleeping as never before,
But the brothers cared not of that, they'd passed through the trees
Steping by known woodlands and passes,
And they'd passed through the sleeping guard,
Which has always been on check (yet not this time),
And so they've crossed the road of the dead near the river,
There they've found a little boat...they've turned upstream by the river,
And none could see this at the morning
As a boat with both sons of Stumbreadan vanished
Unto the mist covering the Nerisya...
